How to trim your Jira time spent data to get accurate results?

Background:

A company uses Jira for managing its projects and tracking the Jira time spent on various tasks. They have teams working in different time zones and with different schedules. However, they face challenges in generating accurate and meaningful Jira time reports reflecting the time spent on tasks within specific date ranges. To solve this issue, they should choose how to track the Jira time spent fast and conveniently. Some add-ons come in handy in such cases. We propose you explore the functionality of the Trim History option in Time in Status.

Objective:

This use case aims to demonstrate how the Trim History option in Time in Status app helps filter and trim the Jira time spent data, enabling accurate time tracking and reporting within specified date ranges.

Step to perform:

  1. Choosing the Report and Filtering:

First, choose one of the 7 types of Jira time reports available in Time in Status . They apply necessary filters to narrow the data set based on the chosen criteria.

  1. Setting Date Ranges:

To get the correct generated data, choose the appropriate date ranges. They have two options: Issue range and Time range.

  • Issue Range: This option shows the scope of issues created, updated, or resolved during the chosen period, along with the corresponding Jira time spent.

  • Time Range: This option allows you to trim the time data you’ve got from the Issue range. It helps in extracting time information only for the specified time range.

For example, you need to get issues created last month, but the reporting time should be only for this week. A task could be created at any time, but you need the time only for the current week. Here’s how these calendars work.

  1. Calendar Configuration:

The report generation is based on the Business Days and Business Hours settings you should previously configure. Why is it helpful? For example, you’re a CEO and have  teams working in different time zones or with different schedules. Let’s imagine, the marketing team works from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., while the support team works from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. It will be difficult to track their Jira time spent, but you can create as many calendars as you need to ensure accurate reporting.

Managers can easily obtain the desired results, thanks to the functionality provided by the Trim History option in Time in Status . By using the Trim History option, the company successfully overcomes the challenges associated with accurate time tracking and Jira time reporting.
